Typically when I think of Gilbert, I think of a quiet but sneakily robust downtown and sticking to the speed limit. Now, however, the good name of Gilbert has been tarnished by a string of incidents allegedly perpetrated by the aptly named “Gilbert Goons.” This “gang” has been responsible for multiple parking lot attacks, threatening social media posts, and striking fear into the minds of the citizens of an otherwise incredibly friendly city. While Gilbert PD does their due diligence to find and apprehend the Gilbert Goons, let’s take a look at the rap sheet these would-be suburban gangsters are due to face.
For starters, if the Goons really are a gang, they’ll be looking at Class 2 Felony charges, punishable by 3 to 12.5 years in prison - and that’s for a first offense! Given that the crimes are happening in an otherwise quiet city, you can safely assume Gilbert PD will throw the whole of their weight into getting these charges to stick. Even if someone gets caught up helping the Goons but claiming they aren’t a member, they’re still looking at a Class 3 Felony for aiding a gang, which comes with 2-8 years in jail.
In one widely circulated video showing the Gilbert Goons attack someone in a parking lot, anyone involved is looking at an assault charge. Depending on the severity of the injuries the victim or victims incurred, the assailants are looking at anything from a Class 1 Misdemeanor and 6 months in jail to a Class 4 Felony and 1 to 3.75 years in jail.
Most recently, a string of Facebook and Instagram photo posts showing self-reported Goons holding guns with vaguely threatening captions have been making the rounds online. Even if the weapons haven’t been used in the assaults allegedly conducted by the Goons, anyone committing a crime and having a weapon available for use could be hit with a Class 2 Felony. The pictures are disturbing on multiple levels - one because they showcase a wide variety of potential firepower, but two because everyone holding the weapons in the photos looks so young. The only thing worse than a Goon is a Goon with a gun.
While the current social outcry is somewhere between “kids will be kids” and “grab your torches and pitchforks!” the fact remains that a crime is a crime, and that disturbing the peace, especially in a city as renowned for its peaceful nature as Gilbert, is grounds for justice. Rest assured, the Goons will be caught, but the severity of the charges they’ll face is up for debate - and the longer they’re out there doing what Goons do, the more fire they’ll face from the court of public opinion, if not a court of law.
